FAQ

Questions, answered.

Who can join?

Lana.org Mail is invite only, which keeps it small and free of spam accounts. Request an invite and we'll email you once you're accepted. Then you can create your mailbox right away.

Does anyone read my mail or show me ads?

No. There are no ads, and your mail isn't scanned for marketing. Remote images are blocked by default, so senders can't use tracking pixels to see when you open their messages.

Is my mail secure?

Mail between members who turn on encryption is end-to-end encrypted. It's encrypted in your browser before it's sent, so only you and the people you write to can read it, not Lana.org or our mail host. Mail with other providers, like Gmail, travels over encrypted connections whenever the other side supports it. You can also protect sign-in with a one-time code or a security key.

What stays visible with end-to-end encryption?

The message, its attachments and your drafts are encrypted. As with every encrypted email service, the subject line, who it's from and to, and when it was sent stay visible, because mail servers need them to deliver it.

Can I use iPhone Mail, Outlook or Thunderbird?

Yes. Your @lana.org mailbox works with any mail program that supports IMAP and SMTP, including iPhone Mail, Gmail for Android, Outlook and Thunderbird. Your folders stay in sync everywhere.

Can I choose any address?

Any address that isn't already taken, using letters, numbers, dots, dashes or underscores. A few system addresses, like postmaster@, are reserved.

What happens if I forget my password?

Contact us and an admin can set a new one for you. Your encryption passphrase is separate and can't be reset by anyone, including us, so keep it somewhere safe.
